[:pb]Quantum effects and Gravity[:]

[:pb]Nesta semana o Instituto de Física e Química (IFQ) está recebendo o Prof. Lawrence Howard Ford, da Tufts University (Massachusetts EUA), na categoria professor visitante estrangeiro. Trata-se de uma visita com fins de colaboração científica entre grupos de pesquisa do IFQ e da Tufts. O professor Ford é um dos grandes nomes da Física Teórica na atualidade, e tem sido reconhecido
pelos resultados de seus trabalhos de pesquisa em diversas áreas da Física, como por exemplo em Teoria Quântica de Campos, Gravitação e Cosmologia. Como uma das atividades propostas durante a sua visita, estamos agendando dois encontros com a comunidade (seminários), onde aspectos importantes sobre a Física de Buracos Negros e Gravitação Quântica serão tratados. Segue abaixo a programação do evento.

TÍTULO: Quantum Effects and Gravity

Resumo:
This series of two talks will discuss a selection of the issues which
arise when one combines quantum theory, especially quantum field theory, with gravitation. The first talk will deal with the issues of negative energy density and its effects, and with quantum fluctuations of the speed of light. Although the energy density of a matter field is positive in classical physics, quantum effects can produce negative energy density. This can in turn create repulsive gravitational effects, and the potential for traversable wormholes or faster than light travel. The restrictions which the laws of physics place on these effects will be discussed. The second talk will treat the Hawking effect, the creation of particles by black holes. Hawking derivation of this effect will be explained in some detail. The profound consequences of the Hawking effect will also be discussed. These include a unification of quantum theory, gravity, and thermodynamics. The unsolved black hole information paradox will also be presented.
